SUMMER MASSAGE TREATMENTS
Ayurvedic lifestyle practices change seasonally. The summer season is a time of activity, building and extroversion. It is when we are called toward activity and self-care practices that cleanse and cool the body. You will see these themes supported by the treatments that we offer during summer including the types of oils and herbs that we use in our treatments.
HOT OIL MASSAGE OR SHEA BUTTER MASSAGE
Traditionally Called Abhyanga
Abhyanga is the foundational massage that is a cornerstone in ayurvedic body therapy. Its primary defining feature lies in the type of oil that is used and how it is applied. In our winter abhyanga treatment we use oil infused with rejuvenative herbs that build and stabilize the body as it profoundly hydrate the skin. We apply the oil using specific strokes that regulate the way that prana (the life force) moves through the body. The oil and its application is powerfully sedating to the nervous system, releases tension in the muscles and provides lasting benefits to the mind, body and spirit. After your treatment, you will be guided to the showers where you will self-apply ‘ubtan’ a traditional ‘soap’ made of chickpea flour and herbs that pull the oil off the skin.
If you are not enthusiastic about oil, we have an in-house blend made of shea butter that is emulsified with herbs and essential oils that smell of vetiver and sandalwood that we will joyfully use in its place.
HOT OIL OR SHEA BUTTER MASSAGE WITH HERBAL STEAM
Traditionally Called Swedana
Herbal steam opens the energetic channels in the body allowing for the full penetration of the medicinal oil to saturate the tissues. After your hot oil massage, your ayurvedic therapist will guide you to our steam cabinet where your entire body will be bathed in the nutritive properties of essential oils and steam.

3rd EYE JOURNEY
Traditionally Called Shirodhara
The space between the brows, or 3rd eye, is a sacred region in yogic anatomy related to intuition and our ability to see our individual story as it relates to the cosmic web of the entire universe. In this treatment, your therapist will teach you a meditation for cultivating intuition. Then, your scalp and hair will be massaged with sacred oils that nourish and heal. In ayurveda, the head is the most important region of the body to massage and is a portal to the entire nervous system. Finally you will experience shirodhara, a traditional treatment where warm oil is poured over the 3rd eye to powerfully sedate the nervous system and induce an inward journey. Benefits: relaxation, deep rest, rejuvenation, develops intuition, relieves headache and nervous tension, restores proper sleep and alleviates the negative affects of chronic worry, tension and stress.
Relieve Eye Tension, Expand Clear Perception
The eyes are the windows to the soul. From an ayurvedic perspective, they are also the windows to the deeper functioning of our physiology. The whites of the eyes can tell us about the health of the liver and the blood, or if there is chronic anger or frustration. Netra Tarpana, the ayurvedic name for washing the eyes with ghee, is used to purify the eyes and enhance our spiritual site. The treatment is unusual, profound and lasting. It begins with a meditation to invoke Truth Seeing. Then, your therapist will build a damn made of dough around each eye and fill it with ghee. You can open your eye under the healing, hydrating and nourishing ghee, or keep it closed. Opening the eye is safe and feels pleasant. Many people are stunned by how much whiter and brighter their eyes are after the treatment, and report how deeply massaged their eyes feel for hours and even days after. Benefits: deeply hydrates the eyes, relieves eye tension and some types of headache, whitens the eyes, and enhances the ability to see the truth.
