During the spring season, kapha dosha is provoked and benefits from procedures that assist its elimination from the body. Allergies, difficulty losing weight, excess mucus production, sluggishness, mental fog, and water retention are some common kapha imbalances. Ayurveda teaches that the spring is the best time of year to engage in an extended cleanse program or fasting regimen, and to cleanse the body of excesses accumulated during winter.
Spring Practices for Cleansing Kapha Dosha Ayurvedic treatments that stimulate the lymphatic system such as udvartana and garshana (on our specials page) can be best supported by a home practice of skin brushing. These treatments stimulate the lymph and circulatory system
Spices. Spices assist with detoxification and stimulate digestive strength. Cayenne pepper, black pepper, and basil burn ama (toxins), expel mucus, and break up blockages in the body.
Eat seasonally. The spring harvest provides bitter greens that scrape mucus off the intestines, and roots that clean the blood and support the liver. Sprouts and seeds that grow during spring are loaded with chlorophyll, which naturally cleanse the blood and increase oxygenation in the tissues. Vata types can experiment with cruciferous vegetables, but must cook and spice them well. Bitter greens, such as dandelion greens and mustard greens, increase liver detoxification. Arugula, radicchio, endive, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprout, green chilies, garlic, and onion pull excess water from the tissues and stimulate agni. Pitta types: exercise caution with spices as part of ongoing lifestyle.
Lower calorie diet during spring. Favor a lighter diet that is vegetable and spice heavy.
Avoid dairy. Dairy products should be avoided altogether in spring. The body is trying to expel mucus at this time of year, and milk will increase it. Substitute dairy with almond nut, seed, or rice milk.
Stimulate the lymph system. Engage in regular skin brushing, use loofah gloves, drink lemon or lime water, and exfoliate with ubtan powders to move the lymph in the body.
Breath Deeply. We manually stimulate our lymphatic system through exercise, breathing, and touch. Pranayama (intentional breathing) directs prana and manipulates the movement of the diaphragm, which is located at the base of the sternum between the rib cage. The manual pumping action of the diaphragm that occurs in pranayama practice, intentionally directs the lymph fluid through its main ducts that are in the center of the chest.
